Thanksgiving Q&A With Sgt. Jenny Leigh Miller

Current single and/or album title? God + Country

What was a typical Thanksgiving meal look like for your family? My family eats turkey, but I have been vegan for 13 years. Rather than turkey, I enjoy Tofurkey, sweet potatoes with brown sugar, and a variety of other delicious veggies.

What were your Thanksgiving traditions when you were younger? Truth? My tradition as a child–I used to sneak slices of turkey to my dog under the table (so I wouldn’t have to eat it) 🙂

How has your Thanksgiving celebration and traditions changed since becoming an adult? I appreciate Thanksgiving more as an adult. As a child, I really just had a distaste for the food, and it was taboo to come out as a vegan. Canned cranberries and all of meat just turned my stomach. But as an adult, I’ve come to realize it’s not about the food, it’s being with family. I lost my grandfather about 10 years ago and thanksgiving, 10 years ago, was the last time I saw him. I will forever remember that time with him. It’s a reminder that our time together is so short. I am thankful for the time I have now with my family.

How will COVID-19 impact your Thanksgiving celebration this year? It will greatly affect us. I am staying home with my husband and our four golden retrievers. My grandmothers are both healthy, but they are over the age of 65. My parents were both in the medical field, so they won’t risk being around anyone during this time (understandably). We will be sharing pictures and videos.

What is your favorite Thanksgiving Day memory? My favorite childhood memory is playing basketball, soccer and other sports with my cousins after Thanksgiving dinner.

What are you most thankful for this year? I am thankful for my health, my loving husband, my brothers and parents, and our four golden retrievers.
