Dann Rogers released a song called “Lesson In Love” earlier this year about abortion. The song shows compassion for the impact that it must have on woman faced with that decision. He said there’s no way that he could know what a woman goes through when she is making that decision.
It’s a song that Rogers wrote several years ago, but he said he recently felt God talking to him and wanting him to released it. He reached out to producer Bill Cuomo, who has worked with artists such as Trace Adkins, KISS and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Cuomo had the idea to turn the song into a piano ballad.
There is also an emotional video for the song featuring a ballerina. He feels that if one woman can hear the song or see the video and decide not to have an abortion, then the song has served its purpose.
Rogers is a man who wants to help people and wants to impact people through his music. “I am an artist so I just create art,” he said, adding that he hasn’t heard anything at all negative about the song.
Rogers said he doesn’t write songs to please others. “Whatever is coming through me is what I write,” he said. He also said if you are making music for money that you are doing it for the wrong reasons.
Rogers is the nephew of country music legend Kenny Rogers and he said that Kenny had a major influence on him. “By the time I was 14, he was already on TV on the Ed Sullivan Show.” Rogers said that Kenny’s band The First Edition had a bigger musical influence than Kenny did.
Rogers has been an artist for over 40 years. He and Kenny sat a unique record in 1979 as being the first two relatives to be in the top 10 of Billboard’s Adult Contemporary singles chart at the same time. While Kenny was on the chart at #5 with “Coward Of The County,” Dann was at #6 with “Looks Like Love Again” from his debut album, Hearts Under Fire.
Kenny Rogers and the First Edition weren’t the only influences he had in his early days of being a songwriter and an artist. He wrote a song for Johnny Nash when he was 15 years old. He said Nash told him that John Lennon had said it was one of the best songs he had heard. “When a Beatle sends you a message at 15 years old, you feel like you’ve peaked already,” she said.
There’s new music on the way from Rogers. He recently traveled to Nashville to record his next single. “I literally live my life one day at a time. Because I’m not signed to a label, I can do whatever I want,” he said.
Although Rogers loves to creating music, he make plenty of time for his family and to enjoy life. “Being a songwriter and a recording artist is not who I am. It’s something I do,” he said. He said he lives with his beautiful wife in Newport Beach, California. He has 22 Bonsai trees. “When I want to rest my mind, I go out to my Bonsai garden,” Rogers said.
