Payton Howie has recently released a new EP. “Each one of those songs on the EP is a different part of who I am,” she said. There’s even a significance in “Youngblood,” the title of the EP. She said it was a nickname she was given by some of the more experienced musicians in her hometown. She would hang around them and she said they taught her what it meant to be a true artist. She also learned about music being a form of expression.
In “Country Before Me,” Howie gives appreciation to the women in country music. She said women such as Loretta Lynn and Reba McEntire had such a bold presence and attitude “Without them doing that, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do,” she said.
Her most popular song on Spotify is currently “Never Go Home” with over 606,000. She describes the song as a straight-up party anthem, adding that it was probably the easiest song to write. She said that the song has been put on several editorial playlists on Spotify. “Break My Own Heart” is another song on the EP that has been put on various editorial playlists on Spotify.
Howie said music has always been in her soul and she’s always felt that she wanted to do this. She said “F150” was the first song that she wrote when she was 16 years old. “I wrote that song in my truck in like an hour,” she said. The song, which was released in 2020, has over 366,000 plays on Spotify.
Howie said she was a college softball player when she made the decision to continue pursuing a degree online. The move allowed her to devote more time to music, including doing more touring. “It’s probably one of the hardest decisions I’ve made in my life thus far,” she said, adding that her last at-bat was a home run. She said her parents were really supportive.
Howie said she lives in Nashville about half of the month and is typically touring the other half of the month. “It’s been crazy… nothing like being around one of the hotspots in the world,” she said.
Howie will have a new single in April and she also plans to release more singles throughout the year. She said she is planning to put out a Christmas song this year.
