Review: Brit Taylor – Real Me

Brit Taylor has a great voice. This album is filled with great traditional country music that could have been released decades ago. The lyrics of these songs are as timeless as the sound. Every one of these songs are about strong emotions like love and heartache. I expect to see great things from Brit Taylor in the future. The album was produced by Dave Brainard and features songs co-written by great songwriters such as Dan Auerbach and Pat McLaughlin.

Here are my thoughts on each song:

Back In The Fire: I love Brit Taylor’s traditional country voice. I think I detect more than a little Loretta Lynn influence on this one. This song is a great choice to start an album. The lyrics are great, but it also showcases her impressive range.

Real Me: I think this was a great choice for the name of this album. I love this song. It shows the vulnerability of opening ourselves and letting those we love see who we are, which can be really scary.

Wagon: This is such a fun up-tempo song with attitude. It has a great hook and it will probably be stuck in my head.

Waking Up Ain’t Easy: I think anyone who has ever had their heart broken and been through a breakup can relate to this song. The writers of this song found a way to put that emotion into words. This kind of song is why country music was invented. Well done!!

Love Me Back: Everyone wants someone who they can love and will love them back. There have been so many country songs on this topic, but the writers of this song have found a way to make this sound new and fresh.

Broken Heart Breaks: This is great country heartbreak song. I love Brit’s voice and it fits this song perfectly. This song is so timeless, it could have easily been released 50 years ago. It will still be awesome 50 years from now.

Married Again: This is a fun up-tempo song on a serious topic. This song is well-written and I am sure there will be some fun sing alongs of this one at Brit’s live show (assuming this pandemic ends so we can have concerts again.)

Leave Me Tomorrow: I’ve unfortunately been in this position more times than I would like to admit: loving someone and trying to desperately to hang on to them. It’s scary to think the one you love could walk out anytime. These are powerful lyrics.

Raggedy Heart: Do you know when you are having a reflective moment about a relationship? This song is that moment set to music. It is another brilliantly written song with a great vocal performance.

Go Down Swingin’: This is an uptempo swing. It has great lyrics and it is a great way to end this album. It leaves me wanting more.

I can’t say that Brit Taylor’s Real Me album is an emotional roller coaster because there are no low points. It is definitely a ride through emotions and this album takes the scenic route.
