Review: George Strait – Honky Tonk Time Machine

It’s been 38 years since George Strait released him first album Strait Country. Country music has changed over that time and Strait’s music has evolved with it, while maintaining the classic traditional sound that has made him a star.

Strait released Honky Tonk Time Machine on Friday. it is one of his best albums to date. It’s the first release since Cold Beer Conversation, which was released in 2015. Honky Tonk Time Machine, released on MCA Nashville, is a collection of 13 songs, which could have as easily been released in 1980s or 1990s. I like the fact that Strait had a hand in writing seven songs on this album. In addition, Strait’s son, Bubba, co-wrote 10 songs on the new album.

“God and Country Music” is a good song on its own, but it benefits from the guest vocals of Strait’s grandson, Harvey. In the first verse, the song mentions the iconic photo of Johnny Cash with his arm around Billy Graham. It proves something that has always been true: religion and country have always gone together. Strait sings, “God and country music/ They both never change/ You find ’em when you need ’em/ Where you stand.” There’s so much truth in those words.

Faith and country music have been interwoven for a long time. In the past, Strait has given some great faith-based songs with “You’ll Be There” and “I Saw God Today.” With the new album, you can add “What Goes Up” to that list. I love the words of this song.

Strait included a cover of Johnny Paycheck’s “Old Violin” on this album. It was a great choice for Strait’s voice and it fits very well on this album. Honestly, if I didn’t know better, I could have believed that it was written for this album. I also love that great songs like this one are being introduced to a new generation.

Strait also paid tribute to tradition with “Sing One With Willie,” a duet with Willie Nelson. In the song, the two legends admit that they would like to sing a song together. This song is just another example how some artists appreciate and support each other.

One of my favorite tracks on this album is “The Weight of the Badge,” the story of a police officer who dedicates his life to protect and serve. The song points out that those that choose to become a police officers put their lives on the line every day. It’s not a sentiment that is often put in songs, but it is one I am sure that police officer and their families will greatly appreciate.

Honky Tonk Time Machine includes some fun songs, such as the title track and “Every Little Honky Tonk Bar.” Country music has had some great songs about having a broken heart. Strait has a couple great ones on this album with “Some Nights” and “Sometimes Love.”
