Tera Lynne Fister Describes New Song As Her “Olive Branch To The Human Race”

Tera Lynne Fister said she knew that it needed to be released immediately as soon as it was written. She calls “I Understand (I Will Never Understand)” as her olive branch to the human race. “It states that I understand I will never understand what you’re going through, or what you have been through, but no matter your makeup, I am here to help you fight the good fight. And the best way I know how to do that is through my music. Let’s help each other,” she said.

Fister said she believes the song reflects where a lot of us are right now, especially with the state of the world. “Between the virus and politics, we’re a hot mess,” she said. Fister said that she hopes that people take away some humility, grace, and want to reflect love in their actions after listening to the song.

Other singles Fister has released include “Scars” earlier this year and “Hell Raiser” last year. She also released “A Cowboy For Christmas” with Kennedy Fitzsimmons in 2018. While Fister said releasing makes the most sense businesswise, she said she would artistically prefer to release an an album.

During the pandemic, Fister said she wrote a lot and also did Facebook and Instagram lives and takeovers. “I was really able to focus on what I wanted out of the music I had just finished recording,” she said. Fister has been able to do a few shows safely since being able to perform again.

Fister said she thinks music is part of her being and it’s part of her makeup. “I couldn’t tell you a moment I became interested because it’s always been my soul,” she said. She also said that she wanted to do music when she found out that songwriting was considered a job. She said she has been writing since she was little. My notebooks in grade school rarely had actual notes. It was all covered in my favorite song lyrics and drawings and then eventually my own poems.

Although she sang in grade school and high school choirs, Fister said she didn’t actually start performing seriously on her own until she moved to Nashville. “I really moved with the intention to be a writer,” she said. “But if I’m being honest with myself, I’ve always craved to be the artist too,”

Fister lists Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Maya Angelou, Hayes Carll, Kacey Musgraves, Shel Silverstein, Bonnie Raitt, and Frank Sinatra as some of her influences. She said she was trying to mimic other artists in her early music, but her current work is completely her own.
