I’ve been listening to country music all my life. My parents raised me on artists like Conway Twitty, George Jones and Merle Haggard.
One artist that I have loved since the mid-1980s is Randy Travis. I remember playing the Storms of Life cassette over and over. I believe the first CD I ever owned was Old 8 X 10.
Country music has always had a lot of respect for Randy Travis. I’ve been at two or three events where Travis has made a surprise appearance since his stroke in 2013. He crowds love to see him. I was excited to get to meet him at CMA Fest a couple of years ago.
Now, WSM 650 AM and the Grand Ole Opry are honoring him for his 60th birthday. Travis is scheduled to make a special appearance on the Opry stage for his birthday. Travis fans Charles Esten, Josh Turner and Charlie Worsham will appear during the show. In addition, Country Music Hall of Famer Don Schlitz will also be there. The legendary songwriter has written or co-written some of Travis’ biggest hits including “Deeper Than The Holler,” “Forever And Ever, Amen,” “Heroes And Friends,” “On the Other Hand” and “Point Of Light.”
WSM 650 AM and its digital counterpart has made Travis artist of the month. Travis’ book Forever and Ever, Amen: A Memoir of Music, Faith and Braving the Storms of Life will be released on May 14. It is available for preorder now at foreverandeveramenbook.com.
