Tyra Madison said she has been performing since she was four years old, but she was 17 years old when she started writing songs. She said she would go to a bluegrass get-together with my grandparents called Pickin’ and Grubhub’ when she was four years old. It was a place where local musicians would get together once a week and just play music. “I gained my love of music through going to that. My papaw also played harmonica and my uncle played guitar so they influenced me musically at a young age,” she said.
When Madison was in kindergarten, she entered a talent show at school. “I won and that sealed the deal that I wanted to pursue singing,” she said. From there, she said her papaw and her uncle played a role in her deciding to become a singer. “My papaw played the harmonica and my uncle played the guitar. We would all sing and play together when I was growing up. Special times that I’ll never forget,” she said.
These days, Madison lives in Nashville. She said she is writing and recording songs one day at a time. She said Carrie Underwood and Maren Morris are among the artists who have influenced her.
Madison’s current single is one that she didn’t write. “Ain’t That Lonely Tonight” was written by Tommy Lee James, Carly Pearce and AJ Prius. “It’s a song about knowing your worth and sticking with that,” she said. Madison said it wasn’t difficult to pick the song as a single. She said she knew she had to record the song when she heard it. “It’s so catchy and the song has a sense of independence that I stand for,” she said.
What does Madison hope listeners take away from the song? “I hope that this single encourages them to “not call their ex” and to not give in to something that is below their standards.,” she said, adding that she wants people to know their worth and to gain confidence in themselves from listening.
Out of the songs which she has had a hand in writing, Madison said “Right Girl Wrong Time” would be her favorite. “I really like the lyrics and the meaning of the song,” she said. “I feel like everyone can relate to being the right person at the wrong time. It is the fastest song I’ve written too. It just came out so much easier than any song I’ve written.”
