CMA Fest: Q & A With Adam Carter

Where and when are you playing during CMA Music Fest? Tuesday, June 4, The Broken Spoke Restaurant and Saloon, 8-11 p.m.,
Thursday, June 6, Hooters, 8-10 p.m.

When did you start singing? I got my first guitar when I was 4. I got serious about playing after getting on stage with Buddy Guy at the age of 7. I start singing around the same time.

Who are your musical influences? Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Billy Joe Shaver, The Rolling Stones, Howlin Wolf, Jason Isbell and too many more to mention. I’ve got influences from everything from Blues to Bluegrass.

What is your favorite concert you have attended? What made it memorable? Eric Clapton in 2004, Greenville, SC. My parents asked me what I wanted for my 10th birthday and all I could think of were Clapton tickets. He played Let It Rain for the first time in like 30 years. Totally badass!! The band band was killer. Billy Preston was supposed to be with him, but sadly was very sick, and had to leave the tour.

What is your favorite place to perform? What do you like about it?Every venue has its perks. Theaters are great to play because the acoustic are typically fantastic and it’s a pretty intimate environment with the crowd.

Other than artists, who has been influential in your decision to become a singer? My parents and my son. My parents pushed me as a kid to be better every day. They supported me from the start. My son gave me a fire back that I was losing. I’ve never worked harder on my career than from the day he was born until now. He’s my inspiration.

What was the first song you ever wrote? I wrote a song called I Wanna Fly when I was about 17 with friend of mine. It was the epitome of the way I felt at that point in my life. I still feel that way to this day. Content is not in my vocabulary. I’m always trying to grow.

What is your favorite original song? What was the inspiration behind it? My favorite song I’ve written to date is a song called Burn Pile. It all started with a guitar riff. That’s typically how all of my songwriting starts. The song is about a girl leaving a guy. After she’s gone, he literally burns everything she left behind that reminds him of her. I think we’ve all experienced a bad breakup and heartbreak. If you haven’t, this song is a pretty good description of how a lot of people feel during it. It hasn’t been recorded yet, but it’s coming soon!
