CMA Fest: Q & A With SixForty1

SixForty1 will perform at the Nashville Acoustic Corner stage at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 8.

1) Who is SixForty1? (literally, metaphorically, musically..)  SixForty1 is a country duo made up of Austin Gee and Brooks Hoffman. The name comes from highway 641, found in Western KY where we went to college at Murray State University. We write pop country music that is inspired by many different genres and artists.

2) What can people expect from your CMA Fest set? Melodies, harmonies, corny jokes, and a great show. We love acoustic shows. It allows us to connect and interact more with the fans.

3) What is the first song you wrote together? The first song we wrote together was Rolling With Me. We got together and wrote it in about an hour about 4 years ago. It was after that night that we knew we had to keep writing. The song can be found online on our first EP.

4) What is your songwriting process usually like?  It depends.. Sometimes a song starts with a title, other times with a catchy melody. Sometimes it takes an hour to write a song, sometimes it takes a couple trys to get it down. We don’t have a set process for every time we go into a write. With every new song comes a new story. Writing a song with our friends that fans can connect with and sing along to is our favorite part about the whole process.

5) How did being a part of Brantley Gilbert’s Kick It In The Ship Cruise help you expand your fan base? The whole experience lit a fire underneath us. We were so grateful to be a part of the cruise. We were happy to have so many new fans wanting to hear our story and find our music so they could play it when they got home.

6) Besides being a part of Brantley’s cruise again this fall, what are your touring plans for this year? We are hitting the road with Micheal Ray at the end of June, Muscadine Bloodline in July and Walker Hayes in August. To say we’re blessed is an understatement. At this stage its about hitting the road as much as possible, so that’s what we are trying to do!

7) Other than musicians, who has been the biggest influence on your decision to pursue music? Definitely our parents. Without them we would not be there. We honestly think they enjoy what we do more than we do! And that’s saying something! This road isn’t always easy. There is not always a song that can make a situation better, but our parents always know how to push us to work harder and be better
