Risa Binder said when she recorded her song “You Came Along” about two years ago, she thought of it as a song to her husband because she was thankful for him being in her life. “When I decided to put it out as our next single, I found out I was pregnant,” she said. The song took on a new meaning for her and “You Came Along” was about her daughter.
Binder has since had her band, who is now about a year old. She said daughter Lielle has toured with them since she was seven weeks old. “She likes to be on stage,” Binder said.
Currently, Binder said she is in a writing phase as she is writing for her next project. “It’s been really great to come home and be a mom and go out into the world and do my art as well,” she said.
When she sits down to have a co-write, Binder said they will talk about what is going on in their lives at the moment. She said she feels like she is doing her job if there’s some hope and some positivity in every song.
Binder said her parents loved James Taylor and Fleetwood Mac. She said she moved to Brooklyn before eventually moving to Nashville and she had a chance to see Fleetwood Mac at Madison Square Garden. Stevie Nicks is also an inspiration for Binder as a writer. “She’s such a talented writer. She paints really awesome pictures with her words,” Binder said.
She said she discovered country and I started listening to artists such as Reba McEntire, Martina McBride, Shania Twain and Dixie Chicks. “All these women singing about following their dreams. It just really inspired me to follow mine too,” Binder said.
Binder’s song “Just Like That” was featured in the soap opera General Hospital and the song was nominated for an Emmy award for Best Song In A Daytime Drama. The first single of her 2014 EP Nashville was “Gotta Have You,” which debuted at number 26 on iTunes Country Releases chart and it was placed in heavy rotation on Sirius XM The Highway. Binder works with producer Luke Wooten.
