Legends Bar and Grill in Hamilton, Ohio was destroyed by a fire last August. It should re-open in another month. The Marathon Music Showcase/ Fundraiser for Legends Bar and Grill will be held on Sept. 15 at Froggy’s in Monroe, Ohio. The benefit will help will help Legends Bar and Grill restock so they can re-open. Then and Now will be one of nearly 30 musical acts to perform. Harlen Lee answered the following questions.
When did you start singing? I’ve been playing guitar for over 35 years and do some singing.
How would you describe your music? I have played and recorded in multiple genres for my whole career including Jazz, Rock , Country, Gospel, R&B and metal.
Who are your musical influences? Oh my! There are so many. I tend to gravitate to those that have their own unique sound and instantly recognizable as themselves.
What is your favorite concert you have attended? What made it memorable? Just this past weekend traveled to Nashville area to see prog supergroup Flying Colors. At the same exact location I witnessed an eclipse in its totality 2 years ago. It’s so rare that this band plays live that people came from all over the world . I now have new friends from Montreal, Germany, Australia, Brazil, Japan, South Africa and Venezuela.
What is your favorite place to perform? What do you like about it? Froggy’s feels like home but anywhere the crowd is engaged and having a good time.
Other than artists, who has been influential in your decision to become a singer? It’s always been inside me.
What was the first song you wrote? A song called “Angel, ” but we have reworked one from that era that we are now playing called “Little Miss Naughty”.
What is your favorite original song? What was the inspiration behind it? I’m always writing, so usually the most current one.
Anything else you would like to add? Music should be from the heart/soul. Don’t conform to what you think will be successful. Play from the heart and you will connect with the right people!
